Disrespect to Prasad brings displeasure of Goddess
Lakshmi This story is taken from the Dasam Skandh of Srimad Devi Bhagavat. Once Durwasha muni (saint) was going from Vaikunth (the abode of Lord Vishnu) to Kailash (the abode of Lord Shiva). On his way he met the king of Gods Indra. Indra bowed to him and offered his prayers. Durwasha muni was satisfied with Indra and he blessed him and gave him a flower of Parijat tree which was given to him by Lord Vishnu. Indra was very proud of his kingdom and lordship and he placed the blessed flower on the head of his elephant Airawat. As soon as the flower touched Airawat, the elephant converted in a form same as Lord Vishnu and went away from Indra. Now, Indra could not ride Airawat. Muni Durwasha came to know of the behaviour of Indra and the disrespect to the holy Prasad (blessed parijat flower). He got angry and cursed Indra to be devoid of all material things and Lakshmi. Immediately after this Indras kingdom Amaravati Puri was taken over by the demons. The demons pushed out Indra from heaven and now he had no place to take shelter. Indra realized his mistake and went to his guru Brihaspati. He cried at his feet and narrated the whole story. The guru told him to meditate and pray to Lord Vishnu. He took him to Brahma and along with other Gods they all went to Lord Vishnu. All the Gods prayed to Lord Vishnu with tears in their eyes. Lord Vishnu saw the pathetic condition of the Gods and was moved by their prayers. He then told them, Gods! Dont fear. I will provide with the glory enhancing immovable Lakshmi but now I must also tell you some thing necessary. You all pay attention. My bondage free devotee who is ever engrossed in my bhajan (name recitation) and chintan (thought) when he becomes displeased with whosoever, then I along with Lakshmi do not stay at that persons place this is true. A place where my devotees are not respected and ill things are said for them, the Mahalakshmi residing at that place gets angry and leaves that place. The person who does not pray to me and eats grains on Ekadasi (the 11th days of the lunar calendar months) and Janamastami (the date of birth of Lord Krishna) that fools place Lakshmi leaves immediately. A person who eats at cowards house and who breaks grass twigs unnecessarily, marks lines on earth with his nails, who is filled with negativity, eats at the time of sunrise, sleeps in the day, does sex in the day and who is undisciplined that persons place my beloved Lakshmi does not reside. At places where people take my name and sing my glory, there the giver of all good things Goddess Lakshmi resides. Places where the conch shell is blown and conch, Shalyagram and Tulsi are kept and prayed upon, there Lakshmi always resides. Places where Brahmins are respected and serviced and Gods are prayed there the lotus faced Goddess Lakshmi resides. The Gods prayed and Goddess Lakshmi blessed them and freed them from the curse of Muni Durwasha. The Gods once again tried and gained hold of their kingdom from the demons. Moral: 1. Never dishonor the Prasad (holy offering). 2. The advice of Lord Vishnu as given to the Gods should be followed by every person who desires to please Goddess Lakshmi and wants to attain Dharam, Artha, Kama and Moksha. In todays world Lakshmi is equated with materialistic things finances and money. This is wrong. Goddess is Lakshmi is the provider of all materialistic and spiritual things in this world. She should be prayed only for devotion (bhakti), spiritual knowledge (gyan) and salvation (mukti). All other things in this world will not last for long. |
